おどる【躍る】

1 〔跳ねる〕 jump up; leap (up); spring (up); (ぴょんぴょんと) skip; hop; (軽やかに) skip; bound; bounce (up).

●銀鱗の躍る渓流 a mountain stream where silvery fish skip.

●彼女は喜びのあまり躍るようにして母親に走り寄った. Overjoyed, she bounded to her mother's side.

・スポーツ欄にはフライ級新チャンピオン誕生の文字が躍っている. The words announcing the birth of a new flyweight champion leap up from the sports columns.

2 〔揺れ動く〕 move around; bounce up and down.

●箱が大きすぎて中で品物が躍っている. Because the box is too big the goods inside are moving around.

・でこぼこ道で自転車が躍った. The bicycle bounced up and down on [because of] the bumpy road.

3 〔ときめく〕 ⇒おどらせる.

●それは心躍る計画だった. It was an exciting plan.

・長年のライバルとの対戦を翌日に控え, 彼は胸が躍った. His heart pounded with excitement as he looked ahead to his bout [match] against his rival of many years' standing the next day.

4 〔(文字が)乱れる〕

●めがねなしで書いたら字が躍っていた. When I wrote without my glasses on, my writing was crooked.
